Knowra French America French America French America comprised territories in the Americas colonized or claimed by France, including New France and Caribbean colonies. Its settlements ranged from fur-trading networks and missionary outposts to plantation societies.
New France : A French colonial territory in North America centered on the St. Lawrence River and extending into the Great Lakes and Mississippi valleys. It was France’s principal mainland colony, linking Canada, the Great Lakes, and Louisiana.
North American fur trade : A commerce in animal pelts, especially beaver fur, that linked Indigenous communities and European merchants across North America. French alliances and trading posts made pelts central to the northern colonies’ economy.
Jacques Cartier : A French explorer whose voyages in 1534–1542 charted parts of the Gulf and St. Lawrence River. His expeditions helped establish France’s claims to parts of northeastern North America.
Haitian Revolution : A revolution from 1791 to 1804 that ended slavery and French rule in Saint-Domingue and established Haiti. It destroyed France’s richest American colony and created the first independent Black republic.
British America : The territories in the Americas colonized or claimed by Britain, including mainland colonies and Caribbean possessions. British colonies often had larger settler populations and different landholding and governing patterns.
French West Indies : French colonies in the Caribbean, including Saint-Domingue, Martinique, and Guadeloupe. These island colonies formed a distinct, plantation-based part of French America.

Samuel de Champlain : A French explorer and colonial administrator who founded Quebec in 1608 and helped build alliances with Indigenous nations. His settlement and diplomacy laid foundations for New France.
Deportation of the Acadians : The forced removal of thousands of Acadians by British authorities from 1755 to 1764. The expulsion fractured French-speaking communities after Britain took Acadia.
Spanish America : The territories in the Americas colonized or claimed by Spain, including much of Central and South America. Spanish America provides a comparison with France’s smaller, more regionally varied possessions.
