French colonial empire

The overseas territories ruled by France, principally from the 16th through the 20th century, across the Americas, Africa, Asia, and Oceania. Its two major phases are often called the First and Second French colonial empires.

French colonization of the Americas: French settlement and territorial rule in the Americas, especially in Canada, the Caribbean, and Louisiana. This early phase established France’s first major overseas territories.
French colonial administration: The institutions and policies through which France governed its colonies and overseas territories. Administrative systems translated imperial claims into local rule.
Jules Ferry: A French statesman who promoted colonial expansion during the Third Republic. His speeches helped justify the empire’s late nineteenth-century growth.
Haitian Revolution: A revolution in Saint-Domingue from 1791 to 1804 that ended slavery and established Haiti. It destroyed French rule in the colony and transformed Atlantic slavery.
British Empire: A global empire ruled by Britain from the early modern period into the twentieth century. Its rivalry with France shaped wars, borders, and colonial losses across continents.
New France: France’s former colonial possessions in North America, including Canada and the Mississippi Valley. Its fall marked the loss of France’s largest continental American holdings.
Code de l'indigénat: A set of exceptional legal rules imposed on Indigenous subjects in French colonies, especially in Africa. It institutionalized unequal rights and punishments under colonial governance.
Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza: An Italian-born French explorer and colonial administrator associated with French expansion in Central Africa. His treaties and expeditions advanced French claims in the Congo region.
Algerian War: The 1954–1962 war between France and Algerian independence forces that ended French rule in Algeria. Its violence and political crisis hastened the empire’s collapse.
Spanish Empire: A global empire established by Spain in the Americas and other regions from the fifteenth century onward. Its earlier American expansion provides a contrast with France’s later colonial reach.
