French colonization of the Americas

French colonization of the Americas was the establishment and expansion of French settlements, trading networks, and colonial rule across parts of North and South America from the sixteenth through nineteenth centuries.

New France: A French colonial territory in North America, centered on the St. Lawrence River and later extending through the Great Lakes and Mississippi basin. Its settlements and institutions formed the largest French colonial presence on the continent.
Quebec: A French-founded settlement on the St. Lawrence River that became the political center of New France. Its founding anchored French claims in the St. Lawrence valley.
Giovanni da Verrazzano: An Italian explorer sailing for France who surveyed parts of the North American coast in 1524. His voyage helped establish French geographic knowledge and claims along the Atlantic coast.
French and Indian War: The North American theater of the Seven Years’ War, fought from 1754 to 1763 between Britain and France and their allies. French defeat transferred most mainland French possessions east of the Mississippi to Britain.
