French conquest of Senegal

The 19th-century expansion of French colonial rule from Senegal’s coast into its interior, achieved through military campaigns, treaties, and commercial pressure.

Senegal River: A major West African river flowing from the Fouta Djallon highlands to the Atlantic Ocean. French forts and steamship routes along the river helped project power inland.
Al-hajj Umar Tall: A nineteenth-century West African Islamic scholar and military leader who founded the Toucouleur Empire. His state resisted French expansion and competed with it for control of the Upper Senegal region.
Saint-Louis, Senegal: A historic city at the mouth of the Senegal River and an early center of French colonial rule. French campaigns and administration inland were organized from this coastal base.
Dakar–Saint-Louis Railway: A railway connecting Dakar with Saint-Louis, completed in 1885 under French colonial rule. Its construction strengthened French control and provoked resistance from rulers including Lat Dior.

Senegalese Tirailleurs: African infantry units recruited by France in Senegal beginning in the nineteenth century. Colonial rule created a military system that recruited Senegalese soldiers for campaigns across the empire.
Treaty of Ndiaw: An 1855 agreement between France and the Waalo kingdom that granted French commercial privileges. It illustrates how treaty-making advanced French influence alongside military force.
Maba Diakhou Bâ: A nineteenth-century Muslim leader who founded a state in the Saloum region of present-day Senegal. His campaigns challenged both French influence and established Senegalese kingdoms.
