French Consulate

The French government established after the coup of 18 Brumaire in 1799, formally a three-consul republic but dominated by First Consul Napoleon Bonaparte until the Empire began in 1804.

Constitution of the Year VIII: The constitution adopted in France in 1799 that established the Consulate and defined its institutions. It created the offices and electoral machinery through which the Consulate governed.
Napoleonic Code: The French civil code promulgated in 1804, consolidating and standardizing private law. Its preparation during the Consulate turned revolutionary legal changes into a durable code.
Coup of 18 Brumaire: The coup of 9–10 November 1799 that overthrew the French Directory and brought Napoleon Bonaparte to power. It directly established the regime that became the Consulate.

Jean-Jacques-Régis de Cambacérès: A French jurist and politician who served as Second Consul and helped shape the Napoleonic Code. As Second Consul, he combined legal expertise with a leading role in the regime.
French Empire: The French regime ruled by Napoleon as emperor from 1804 to 1814, and again briefly in 1815. The Empire replaced the Consulate’s republican titles with hereditary imperial sovereignty.
