French Foreign Legion

A corps of the French Army founded in 1831 that recruits foreign nationals and serves in France’s military operations. It is distinguished by its separate identity, traditions, and enlistment system.

Louis Philippe I: King of the French from 1830 to 1848, whose government established the French Foreign Legion. His government created the Legion in 1831 during France’s post-revolutionary reorganization.
French Army: The land warfare branch of France’s armed forces. The Legion is a corps within this larger military institution.
Pierre Joseph François Bosquet: A French general who served in Algeria and the Crimean War and became a marshal of France. His service with the Legion in Algeria helped establish his early military career.
Battle of Camarón: An 1863 battle in Mexico in which a small French Foreign Legion force resisted Mexican troops during the French intervention. The battle became the Legion’s most enduring example of collective sacrifice.
Camerone Day: The annual French Foreign Legion commemoration of the Battle of Camarón, held on April 30. The ceremony turns the battle into a central ritual of Legion identity.
French conquest of Algeria: The French invasion and occupation of Algeria, beginning in 1830 and extending through decades of conflict. The Legion’s first deployment followed France’s invasion of Algeria.
Legionnaire recruitment: The process by which the French Foreign Legion enlists foreign nationals under its recruitment rules. Recruitment gives the Legion its multinational personnel and distinct enlistment system.
Jean Danjou: A French Foreign Legion officer killed at the Battle of Camarón in 1863. His death at Camarón became central to the Legion’s commemorative tradition.
Siege of Tuyen Quang: An 1884–1885 siege in which French forces, including Foreign Legion troops, defended a post in northern Vietnam. The Legion’s defense there became a prominent episode of its service in Indochina.
Legion of Honour: France’s highest order of merit, awarded for military or civil achievements. Despite the shared word “Legion,” this national decoration is separate from the military corps.
