French Revolutionary Wars

A series of conflicts in which revolutionary France fought European coalitions from 1792 until the establishment of the Consulate in 1802.

War of the First Coalition: The 1792–1797 conflict between revolutionary France and a changing alliance of European powers. The first major coalition war began the series and tested France’s revolutionary armies.
French Revolution: The political and social upheaval in France that began in 1789 and ended the monarchy’s old order. The wars emerged from revolutionary conflict over sovereignty, religion, and France’s place in Europe.
Napoleon Bonaparte: A French general who rose to political power through military victories and became First Consul in 1799. His Italian victories and coup helped transform the wars and end the Directory.
Battle of Valmy: A September 1792 battle in which French forces halted a Prussian advance into France. The victory preserved the new republic’s survival at the wars’ opening.
Treaty of Campo Formio: The 1797 treaty between France and Austria that ended the War of the First Coalition. It recognized French territorial gains and redrew political boundaries in Italy and the Low Countries.
War of the Second Coalition: The 1798–1802 conflict between France and a coalition led by Austria, Russia, and Britain. Its reversals and French victories brought the wars to their close.
Declaration of Pillnitz: An 1791 statement by Austria and Prussia expressing concern for Louis XVI and warning of possible intervention. French revolutionaries interpreted the declaration as a threat of foreign interference.
Lazare Carnot: A French military organizer and politician who directed recruitment and army operations during the Revolution. His administrative work supported the mass armies that France deployed.
Siege of Toulon: The 1793 siege in which republican forces recaptured the French naval port from royalist and allied occupiers. Napoleon’s role in the siege brought him early military notice.
Batavian Republic: A French-supported republic established in the Netherlands in 1795 after the French invasion. French military success replaced the Dutch Republic with a dependent sister republic.
