French Union

The French Union was a political framework established by France’s 1946 Constitution to organize relations between the French Republic, its colonies, protectorates, and associated territories.

Brazzaville Conference: A 1944 conference where Free French officials discussed reforms to France’s African colonies. Its proposals foreshadowed postwar reforms but rejected immediate self-government.

French Union for the New Republic: A French political organization founded in 1955 to support Charles de Gaulle’s return to power. Despite its similar name, this party was unrelated to the constitutional French Union.
Madagascar uprising of 1947: An armed revolt against French rule in Madagascar, followed by a severe colonial crackdown. Its repression showed that the Union did not prevent coercive colonial rule.
Léopold Sédar Senghor: Senegalese poet, politician, and first president of Senegal after independence. He participated in French politics while advocating African self-government and eventual independence.
