Friedrich Hayek

Friedrich Hayek was an Austrian-born British economist and political philosopher who defended liberal institutions and argued that prices coordinate dispersed knowledge.

Dispersed knowledge: Knowledge of local conditions, needs, and opportunities is spread among individuals rather than held by one authority. Hayek argued that this scattered knowledge makes centralized economic direction inherently difficult.
Austrian School: A tradition of economic thought emphasizing individual choice, subjective value, and market coordination. Hayek inherited its attention to prices and individual knowledge, while developing those themes in new directions.
John Maynard Keynes: A British economist who advocated active fiscal policy to address economic downturns and unemployment. Their opposing accounts of recessions and stabilization policy defined a major economic debate.
The Road to Serfdom: Hayek’s 1944 book arguing that extensive economic planning can threaten political liberty. It presents his best-known warning about the political risks of replacing markets with comprehensive planning.
Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences: An annual economics prize established by Sweden’s central bank and first awarded in 1969. Hayek shared the 1974 prize with Gunnar Myrdal for work on money, economic fluctuations, and their interdependence.

Ordoliberalism: A German liberal tradition favoring a strong legal framework to sustain competitive markets. Its emphasis on an active state framework contrasts with Hayek’s distinctive account of evolved market orders.
