Friedrich Ratzel

Friedrich Ratzel (1844–1904) was a German geographer and ethnographer who helped establish human geography and political geography. His writings examined how human societies and states relate to their environments and territories.

Human geography: The study of people, places, and the spatial patterns of human life. Ratzel helped establish this field by studying settlement, migration, and human-environment relations.
Lebensraum: A German term meaning living space, later used in political and expansionist doctrines. Ratzel used the term for the spatial conditions a state needed to sustain its growth.
University of Heidelberg: A German university founded in 1386, located in Heidelberg. Ratzel studied at Heidelberg before pursuing his academic career in geography.
Rudolf Kjellén: A Swedish political scientist who developed the term geopolitics and theories of the state as an organism. Kjellén extended Ratzel’s organic conception of the state into geopolitical theory.
Political geography: The study of how political processes and power relate to places and territory. Ratzel’s account of states and territorial expansion helped shape this field.

Territoriality: The strategies and practices through which individuals or groups claim and control space. Territorial control is central to Ratzel’s account of state development and expansion.
