Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel

Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel (1784–1846) was a German astronomer and mathematician who made the first reliable measurement of stellar parallax and advanced precision astronomy.

61 Cygni: A binary star system whose parallax Friedrich Bessel measured in 1838, establishing its distance from Earth. Bessel used this nearby star system to make the first reliable stellar parallax measurement.
Bessel function: A solution of Bessel’s differential equation, arising in problems with cylindrical or circular symmetry. These functions bear Bessel’s name and connect his mathematical work to wave and heat problems.
