Friedrich Wöhler

Friedrich Wöhler (1800–1882) was a German chemist whose 1828 synthesis of urea from inorganic compounds challenged the idea that organic substances required a special life force.

Vitalism: The doctrine that living organisms depend on a distinctive life force not found in inanimate matter. Wöhler’s synthesis was later treated as evidence against vitalism, though it did not immediately end the debate.
Ammonium cyanate: An ionic compound with formula NH₄OCN that can rearrange into urea. It was the inorganic starting material in Wöhler’s reported preparation of urea.
Marburg University: A public research university in Marburg, Germany, founded in 1527. Wöhler studied medicine there before turning toward chemical research.
Aluminum: A lightweight metallic chemical element with symbol Al and atomic number 13. Wöhler first isolated aluminum metal in 1827 by reducing aluminum chloride with potassium.
Organic chemistry: The branch of chemistry concerned chiefly with carbon-containing compounds and their structures, properties, and reactions. His result helped weaken the proposed boundary separating organic compounds from ordinary chemical synthesis.
Isomerism: The phenomenon in which compounds share a molecular formula but differ in atom arrangement or structure. The conversion illustrates how rearrangement can produce a compound with different properties from its starting material.
Leopold Gmelin: A German chemist known for his influential handbook of inorganic chemistry. Gmelin introduced Wöhler to chemistry during his medical studies at Marburg.
Beryllium: A lightweight, hard chemical element with symbol Be and atomic number 4. Wöhler independently isolated beryllium in 1828 while investigating its compounds.
Urea: A nitrogen-containing organic compound produced in mammals as a major waste product of protein metabolism. The compound Wöhler made from ammonium cyanate in his celebrated 1828 experiment.
Chemical synthesis: The deliberate production of chemical compounds through controlled reactions from simpler substances. Wöhler’s experiment showed that a compound associated with organisms could be prepared by laboratory reactions.
