Frisian languages

The Frisian languages are a group of West Germanic languages comprising West Frisian, North Frisian, and Saterland Frisian, spoken in the Netherlands and Germany.

West Frisian: A Frisian language spoken mainly in the Dutch province of Friesland. It is the largest branch and the only Frisian language with official status in the Netherlands.
Anglo-Frisian languages: A proposed grouping of English and Frisian based on shared historical linguistic features. Frisian and English show close early affinities, though the grouping’s status is debated.
Frisian language education: The teaching and study of Frisian languages in schools and other educational settings. Education supports transmission, especially where younger speakers use Frisian less at home.
Dutch language: A West Germanic language spoken chiefly in the Netherlands and Belgium. Dutch is West Frisian’s dominant neighboring language, not a Frisian branch.
North Frisian: A group of Frisian varieties spoken along Germany’s North Sea coast and on nearby islands. Its many local varieties form the northern branch of the Frisian languages.
Proto-Germanic: The reconstructed ancestor of the Germanic languages, spoken before their earliest written records. The Frisian branches ultimately descend from this common Germanic ancestor.
West Frisian language policy: Measures governing the use and support of West Frisian in the Netherlands. Legal recognition and public services shape the language’s institutional presence.
Low German: A group of West Germanic varieties spoken mainly in northern Germany and surrounding regions. Low German neighbors the Frisian languages but belongs to a separate linguistic grouping.
Saterland Frisian: A Frisian language spoken in the Saterland region of Lower Saxony, Germany. It is the smallest branch, spoken inland in a region surrounded by Low German.
Great Vowel Shift: A major series of long-vowel changes in English between the late Middle Ages and early modern period. English underwent this distinctive change, while Frisian developed along different sound histories.
