Knowra Fritz Pregl Fritz Pregl Fritz Pregl (1869–1930) was an Austrian chemist who developed quantitative organic microanalysis, enabling elemental analysis of samples weighing only a few milligrams. He received the 1923 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
Organic chemistry : The branch of chemistry concerned with carbon compounds, including their structures, properties, reactions, and synthesis. Pregl’s methods measured the elemental composition of organic compounds.
Microanalysis : The chemical analysis of samples whose mass is very small, often only milligrams or less. Pregl’s work established a precise quantitative form of organic microanalysis.
University of Graz : An Austrian public university founded in 1585 and based in the city of Graz. Pregl studied and later held academic posts at this university.
1923 Nobel Prize in Chemistry : The Nobel Prize in Chemistry awarded to Fritz Pregl in 1923 for his development of quantitative organic microanalysis. The prize recognized the analytical method that defined Pregl’s scientific legacy.
Elemental analysis : The determination of which elements, and how much of each, are present in a substance. Pregl refined this practice to work with minute quantities of organic material.
Carbon–hydrogen analysis : A method for determining carbon and hydrogen content by converting a sample into measurable combustion products. Pregl’s procedures made these measurements practical with minute organic samples.
University of Innsbruck : A public university in Innsbruck, Austria, founded in 1669. Pregl’s early academic career included a professorship at Innsbruck.
Nobel Prize in Chemistry : An annual international award recognizing major contributions to chemistry, established by Alfred Nobel’s will. Pregl’s 1923 award placed microanalysis among chemistry’s recognized advances.
Analytical chemistry : The branch of chemistry that identifies substances and measures their amounts or properties. Quantitative microanalysis is a specialized form of chemical measurement.
Kjeldahl method : A laboratory method for measuring nitrogen in organic materials by digestion, distillation, and titration. Pregl refined nitrogen analysis for the small samples used in microanalysis.
