Frottage

Frottage is an image-making technique in which a pencil or another medium is rubbed over paper placed on a textured surface, transferring its patterns.

Texture: Texture is the perceived or physical surface quality of an object, such as roughness, smoothness, or grain. Raised and recessed surface features create the patterns transferred in a rubbing.
Max Ernst: Max Ernst was a German-born artist and a leading figure in Dada and Surrealism. He developed frottage as an artistic method and named it in 1925.
Gravestone rubbing: A gravestone rubbing records carved lettering or ornament by rubbing a medium over paper laid against a gravestone. It is a familiar use of rubbing that documents surface details rather than inventing a composition.
Automatic drawing: Automatic drawing is a practice in which marks are made with limited conscious planning to encourage spontaneous imagery. Both methods reduce deliberate control, though frottage also depends on the physical texture beneath the paper.
Graphite: Graphite is a crystalline form of carbon used in pencils and other writing and drawing materials. Its soft particles transfer readily to paper as it passes over surface relief.
Surrealism: Surrealism was an artistic and literary movement that sought to release imagination from rational control. Ernst introduced frottage within Surrealism as a way to provoke unexpected images.
Bark rubbing: A bark rubbing transfers the raised texture of tree bark onto paper using a rubbing medium. It demonstrates how frottage can capture irregular natural textures.
Chance in art: Chance in art is the use of unpredictable events or outcomes in creating or structuring a work. Frottage makes accidental surface patterns a starting point for artistic decisions.
Relief printing: Relief printing makes images by inking raised areas of a printing surface and pressing them onto paper. Both processes exploit raised surfaces, but frottage transfers texture without preparing an inked block.
Histoire naturelle (Max Ernst): Histoire naturelle is Max Ernst’s 1926 portfolio of images made using frottage. The portfolio established frottage as a sustained artistic practice rather than a technical novelty.
