Fucus

Fucus is a genus of brown seaweeds found mainly on rocky shores of the North Atlantic and adjacent seas. Its species are adapted to life in the intertidal zone, where tides alternately expose them to air and seawater.

Brown algae: A diverse group of mostly marine algae whose pigments give them a brown or olive color. Fucus belongs to this group, whose pigments and stored compounds distinguish it from green and red algae.
Intertidal zone: The coastal area alternately covered by seawater and exposed to air as tides rise and fall. Fucus species occupy this zone and must tolerate repeated immersion and exposure.
Fucus vesiculosus: A common North Atlantic brown seaweed with paired air bladders along many branches. Its conspicuous bladders make it a familiar example of the genus’s intertidal adaptations.

Phaeophyceae: The class of brown algae that includes kelps and many smaller seaweeds. This taxonomic class contains Fucus and places it among brown algae with varied body forms.
Air bladder: A gas-filled cavity in an aquatic organism that provides buoyancy or helps position tissues. In some Fucus species, paired bladders lift branches toward light when submerged.
