Fujiwara clan

A Japanese aristocratic clan that shaped imperial politics for centuries, especially through court marriage alliances and the regency offices of sesshō and kampaku.

Sesshō: A Japanese regent who governed on behalf of a child emperor. Fujiwara regents used this office to wield imperial authority during an emperor’s minority.
Nakatomi no Kamatari: A seventh-century Japanese courtier and founder of the Fujiwara lineage. Emperor Tenji granted him the Fujiwara name after his role in court politics.
Fujiwara no Yoshifusa: A ninth-century Fujiwara leader who became the first non-imperial sesshō. His appointment established a precedent for Fujiwara regency.
Insei: A Japanese system in which retired emperors exercised power from cloistered status. It offered emperors a means to counter Fujiwara regents and reclaim political initiative.

Fujiwara no Fuhito: A powerful early-eighth-century courtier who established the Fujiwara family’s political prominence. His descendants formed the four principal Fujiwara houses.
