Fujiwara regency

A system of political dominance in which Fujiwara leaders governed as regents for child or adult emperors, especially during Japan’s Heian period.

Sesshō: A regent who governed for an emperor too young to rule independently. Fujiwara men used this office to rule during an emperor’s childhood.
Fujiwara no Yoshifusa: A ninth-century Fujiwara statesman who became the first non-imperial sesshō. His appointment established a precedent for Fujiwara regency.
Fujiwara clan: A Japanese aristocratic clan that dominated imperial court politics for much of the Heian period. The regency was the clan’s principal method of governing without claiming the throne.
The Tale of Genji: An early eleventh-century Japanese novel by Murasaki Shikibu, set among Heian court elites. Its courtly world reflects the social order sustained by Fujiwara dominance.
Cloistered rule: A form of government in which a retired emperor continued to wield authority, often from a Buddhist monastery. It provided retired emperors with a rival power base against Fujiwara regents.
Kampaku: A chief adviser who exercised regency-like authority for an adult emperor. This office extended Fujiwara influence beyond emperors’ minority.
Fujiwara no Mototsune: A Fujiwara statesman who held the offices of sesshō and kampaku in the ninth century. His career helped define the kampaku’s authority over an adult emperor.
Fujiwara no Kamatari: A seventh-century court noble who helped establish the Fujiwara lineage. His descendants built the family network that later controlled regencies.
Byōdō-in: A Buddhist temple in Uji whose Phoenix Hall was built by Fujiwara no Yorimichi in 1053. The temple embodies the wealth and religious patronage accumulated by Fujiwara leaders.
Shogunate: A Japanese military government headed by a shogun. Warrior government displaced court regency as Japan’s dominant political arrangement.
