Fula jihads

Fula jihads were eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Islamic reform wars led by Fulani (Fula) leaders in West Africa. They established Muslim states, including the Sokoto Caliphate and the Imamate of Futa Jallon.

Sokoto Jihad: A jihad led by Usman dan Fodio beginning in 1804 that founded the Sokoto Caliphate. Its sweeping victories created the largest and most influential state to emerge from these movements.
Usman dan Fodio: A Fulani Islamic scholar and reformer who led the Sokoto Jihad and founded the Sokoto Caliphate. His preaching and leadership shaped the most consequential Fula jihad.
Islamic reform: Efforts to renew Muslim belief and practice by correcting teachings or institutions seen as departures from religious norms. Reform claims supplied the moral and political case for challenging existing rulers.
Fulani War: A British colonial war against the Sokoto Caliphate and its emirates from 1900 to 1903. It marked the military defeat of the largest state created by the jihad movements.
Torodbe: A West African Muslim clerical community associated with reform movements and leadership in several Fula-speaking regions. Their role complicates accounts that attribute the jihads to Fulani identity alone.
Futa Jallon: A highland region in present-day Guinea where Muslim Fulani rulers established an imamate in the eighteenth century. Its earlier state-building offers a major example of Fula-led Islamic reform.
Nana Asma'u: A nineteenth-century poet, scholar, and teacher in the Sokoto Caliphate, and daughter of Usman dan Fodio. Her writings and teaching networks show how the reform movement continued beyond warfare.
Takfir: The practice of declaring a person or group outside Islam. Disputes over whether rulers were legitimate Muslims helped justify armed opposition.
British conquest of Northern Nigeria: The British military and political takeover of northern Nigerian territories around the turn of the twentieth century. Colonial rule absorbed Sokoto's political structures while ending its independence.
Fulani identity: The historically changing forms of cultural, linguistic, and political belonging among Fulani communities. Jihad leaders mobilized across social boundaries that do not map neatly onto modern ethnic categories.
