Knowra Funan Funan Funan was an early Southeast Asian polity centered in the Mekong Delta, active roughly from the first to seventh centuries CE. Its history is known chiefly through Chinese records and archaeological evidence.
Mekong Delta : A broad, low-lying river delta in southern Vietnam and Cambodia formed by the Mekong River. Funan’s political center lay in this delta, whose waterways connected settlements and trade routes.
Canal network of Oc Eo : A system of ancient waterways around Oc Eo connecting settlement, agricultural, and coastal zones. The canals show how Funan’s inhabitants moved goods and people through the delta.
Kaundinya : A legendary or historical Brahmin associated with the foundation traditions of early mainland Southeast Asian polities. Chinese accounts connect Funan’s founding story to a figure named Hun-t’ien, often identified with Kaundinya.
Funanese coinage : Coins found at sites associated with Funan, including issues bearing symbols linked to regional commerce. Coin finds offer evidence for exchange and monetary practices beyond the written accounts.
Chenla : A polity or group of polities described in Chinese records as succeeding Funan in parts of mainland Southeast Asia. Chinese sources present Chenla as a successor, though the transition may not have been a simple replacement.
Oc Eo : An archaeological site in southern Vietnam associated with a large ancient settlement and extensive trade goods. Its remains are central to archaeological accounts of Funan’s urban life and commerce.
Rice cultivation : The growing of rice as a food crop, often in flooded fields or irrigated landscapes. Delta agriculture could support settled populations and political centers.
Soma (Naga princess) : A legendary Naga princess who appears in Southeast Asian origin traditions involving a foreign founder. The union of a foreign founder and a local princess became part of Funan’s remembered beginnings.
Khao Sam Kaeo : An early urban and craft-production site on the Thai-Malay Peninsula, active during the first millennium BCE. Its earlier trade networks help illuminate the regional setting in which Funan later developed.
Khmer Empire : A powerful Khmer state centered at Angkor that flourished from the ninth to fifteenth centuries. Its later prominence can obscure the distinct, earlier history of Funan and its uncertain relation to Khmer state formation.
