Fungal spore

A reproductive cell or structure that can develop into a fungus under suitable conditions. Spores disperse fungi and help them survive or reproduce.

Spore germination: The resumption of growth by a dormant spore under suitable conditions. Germination is the transition from a dispersed fungal spore to active growth.
Fungus: A eukaryotic organism that absorbs nutrients and has chitin-containing cell walls. Fungal spores are reproductive units of organisms in this broad kingdom.
Fungal infection: A disease caused by fungi growing in or on a host. Some fungal infections begin when inhaled or contacted spores germinate in a host.
Bacterial endospore: A dormant, highly resistant structure formed inside certain bacteria for survival, not reproduction. Despite the name, an endospore is not a reproductive cell like a fungal spore.
Conidium: An asexual fungal spore formed externally on a specialized hypha or conidiophore. Conidia are a major class of spores produced for fungal dispersal.
Hypha: A tubular filament that forms the basic growing structure of many fungi. A germinating spore commonly grows into hyphae, which extend the fungus.
Aspergillosis: A group of diseases caused by inhaling spores of Aspergillus fungi. This disease illustrates how airborne spores can initiate infection.
Seed: A plant reproductive structure containing an embryo and stored resources, enclosed by a protective coat. Seeds contain multicellular embryos and reserves; fungal spores are generally simpler units.
Sporangiospore: An asexual fungal spore formed inside a sporangium. This spore type develops within a sac-like structure rather than externally.
Mycelium: A network of fungal hyphae that forms the main vegetative body of many fungi. A spore can establish a mycelium after germination and sustained growth.
