Fungal Structures

Fungal structures are the vegetative and reproductive components of fungi, from microscopic filaments to spore-producing bodies. Their forms support growth, nutrient uptake, survival, and reproduction.

Hypha: A hypha is a threadlike fungal filament that grows at its tip and can branch. Hyphae are the basic filaments from which most larger fungal structures develop.
Apical growth: Apical growth is extension at the tip of a cell or filament. Fungal hyphae lengthen by directing new wall material to their growing tips.
Fungal fruiting body: A fungal fruiting body is a reproductive structure that produces or releases spores. Mushrooms and other visible reproductive forms are fruiting bodies.
Basidiocarp: A basidiocarp is the fruiting body of a basidiomycete, where basidia produce basidiospores. Many mushrooms are basidiocarps, with spores formed on specialized cells.
Plant tissue: Plant tissue is an organized group of plant cells performing shared functions. Unlike plant tissues, fungal bodies generally grow as hyphal networks rather than organs.
Mycelium: A mycelium is an interconnected network of fungal hyphae. A mycelium is the main vegetative body formed by many fungal structures.
Branching (biology): Branching is the formation of new extensions from an existing biological structure. Hyphal branching expands the area a mycelium can explore.
Mushroom: A mushroom is the spore-producing fruiting body of certain fungi, usually with a stem and cap. It is a familiar example of a large, visible fungal structure.
Ascocarp: An ascocarp is the spore-producing fruiting body of an ascomycete fungus. It houses asci, the sacs in which sexual ascospores form.
Bacterial biofilm: A bacterial biofilm is a community of bacteria embedded in a self-produced extracellular matrix. Biofilms can resemble fungal mats but are built from bacterial cells, not hyphae.
