Funicular

A railway on a steep slope in which cables haul cars, commonly using two cars that counterbalance one another. Its fixed track distinguishes it from cable cars that grip a moving cable.

Counterweight: A weight that balances or offsets another load in a mechanical system. Many funiculars use one car's descent to help pull the other car uphill.
Railway track: A guided path of rails and supporting structures for rail vehicles. Funicular cars run on fixed rails rather than steering freely across a surface.
Otis Tufts: An American inventor and engineer associated with early passenger-carrying inclined railways. His 1830s designs helped establish cable-hauled passenger travel on steep inclines.
Hong Kong Peak Tram: A funicular railway connecting Central Hong Kong with Victoria Peak. It demonstrates how a funicular can carry commuters and visitors up a steep urban hillside.
Aerial tramway: A cable transport system that carries cabins suspended above the ground between terminals. An aerial tramway hangs its vehicles from cables instead of running them on a steep fixed track.

Reisszug: A privately operated inclined railway serving Hohensalzburg Fortress in Salzburg, Austria. Often cited as an early surviving example of a cable-hauled incline, it predates modern funiculars.
Budapest Castle Hill Funicular: A funicular linking the Danube embankment in Budapest with Buda Castle Hill. Its short route shows how funiculars connect lower transport corridors to elevated historic districts.
Gondola lift: An aerial cableway whose cabins circulate continuously on a moving cable. Like a funicular, it serves steep terrain, but its cabins travel overhead on a continuous loop.
