Funj Sultanate

A Muslim kingdom in the eastern Sudanese region, founded in the early 16th century and centered on Sennar until its conquest by Egypt in 1821.

Sennar: A city on the Blue Nile that served as the Funj Sultanate’s capital. The royal court and political institutions were concentrated in the kingdom’s capital.
Amara Dunqas: The first ruler traditionally credited with founding the Funj Sultanate in the early sixteenth century. His reign marks the kingdom’s emergence in historical accounts.
Islam in Sudan: The history and practice of Islam among Sudan’s diverse communities. Funj rulers helped establish Muslim institutions across central and eastern Sudan.
