Furfural

Furfural is an aromatic aldehyde with formula C₅H₄O₂, produced by dehydrating pentose sugars. It is used as a chemical feedstock and selective solvent.

Pentose: A monosaccharide containing five carbon atoms, including xylose and arabinose. Pentoses supply the carbon skeleton that forms furfural during dehydration.
Furfural solvent: The use of furfural as a selective industrial solvent, especially in petroleum refining. Its solvent behavior enables separation of aromatic compounds from lubricant oils.
Carl Harries: A German chemist known for work on rubber chemistry and organic reactions. Harries reported furfural formation from plant materials in the nineteenth century.
Benzaldehyde: An aromatic aldehyde consisting of a benzene ring bonded to a formyl group. It shares furfural’s aldehyde function but has a carbocyclic benzene ring instead.
Acid-catalyzed dehydration: A reaction that removes water from a molecule under acidic conditions. Acid and heat convert pentose sugars into furfural by successive water losses.
Lube oil refining: The processing of base oils to improve properties such as viscosity, color, and stability. Furfural extraction has been used to remove aromatic components from lubricating-oil stocks.
Hemicellulose: A group of plant-cell-wall polysaccharides containing varied sugars, including pentoses. Hemicellulose is the principal biomass source of pentose sugars used to make furfural.
5-Hydroxymethylfurfural: A furan-based aldehyde with a hydroxymethyl group, formed mainly from hexose sugars. It is a related biomass-derived furan aldehyde, typically obtained from six-carbon sugars.
Xylose: A five-carbon aldose sugar found in plant cell walls and hemicellulose. Xylose is a common feedstock for industrial furfural production.
Furan resins: Thermosetting polymers made from furan-based compounds, valued for chemical and heat resistance. Furfural-derived furfuryl alcohol is a principal precursor to these resins.
