Fused ring

A ring arrangement in which two rings share an edge, including its two atoms and their bond. Fused rings can be part of larger polycyclic structures.

Cyclic compound: A compound whose atoms form at least one closed loop. Fused rings are a specific arrangement of cycles within a compound.
Ring junction: The atoms and bonds at the boundary where rings connect in a polycyclic structure. A fused pair has a shared bond and its two endpoint atoms as the junction.
Naphthalene: An aromatic hydrocarbon composed of two fused benzene rings. It is the simplest familiar example of an aromatic fused-ring system.
Spiro compound: A polycyclic compound whose rings share exactly one atom. A spiro junction shares a single atom, not the edge shared by fused rings.
Graph theory: The mathematical study of structures made from vertices connected by edges. Molecular rings can be represented as cycles in a graph of atoms and bonds.
Cis–trans isomerism: Stereoisomerism arising when groups or ring segments occupy different relative sides of a reference plane. Groups at a ring junction can lie on the same or opposite faces.
Anthracene: An aromatic hydrocarbon composed of three linearly fused benzene rings. Its extended fused framework illustrates how ring fusion grows aromatic systems.
Cage compound: A polycyclic molecule whose bonds form a three-dimensional cage-like framework. Cage frameworks connect rings through a network rather than a single shared edge.
Polycyclic compound: A compound containing multiple rings in its molecular structure. Fused rings form one way for multiple rings to share atoms and bonds.
Conformational analysis: The study of molecular shapes produced by rotations and ring motions without breaking bonds. Fused rings restrict the conformations available to each other.
