Futon

A Japanese mattress designed to be folded or rolled away when not in use. In Western usage, a futon often combines a mattress with a frame that converts between sofa and bed.

Shikibuton: A Japanese bedding mattress placed directly on the floor, typically folded or rolled for storage. This is the mattress component most closely matching the traditional Japanese futon.
Folding bed: A bed whose frame folds to reduce the space it occupies when stored. It folds as furniture, unlike a traditional futon mattress that is put away separately.
Platform bed: A bed with a raised, solid or slatted base that supports a mattress without a box spring. It keeps the mattress permanently raised rather than storing it away each day.
Minimalism: A design approach that reduces objects and visual complexity to essentials. Putting bedding away can leave a room open and reduce permanent furnishings.
Kakebuton: A Japanese comforter used as the upper layer of bedding. It commonly accompanies a shikibuton in a Japanese sleeping arrangement.
Convertible sofa: A sofa designed to change into another form, commonly a bed. Western futons are one kind of sofa-to-bed convertible.
Murphy bed: A bed hinged to a wall or cabinet that folds upright when not in use. Like a futon, it frees floor space, but it stores the bed by folding the frame vertically.
Small apartment: A compact dwelling with limited floor area and storage space. A convertible futon can provide seating and sleeping without requiring separate furniture.
Tatami: A traditional Japanese floor covering made from woven rush over a straw or compressed-fiber core. Its firm, resilient surface is a traditional place to lay a futon.
Slatted bed base: A bed support made from a series of spaced, parallel slats. Some Western futons rest on slats that support the mattress in both sofa and bed positions.
