Futures exchange

A regulated marketplace where standardized futures contracts are listed and traded. It provides rules and infrastructure for price discovery, clearing, and contract settlement.

Futures contract: A standardized agreement to buy or sell an asset at a specified price on a future date. The exchange lists these contracts and defines their terms.
Commodity exchange: A marketplace for trading standardized contracts or physical commodities under established rules. Many futures exchanges developed from organized commodity trading venues.
Dōjima Rice Exchange: An organized rice market established in Osaka during Japan’s Tokugawa period, known for trading rice claims and futures-like contracts. Its rice trading illustrates an early organized market for forward obligations.
Hedging: A strategy that uses an offsetting position to reduce exposure to price risk. Producers and buyers use futures to stabilize prices for planned transactions.
Over-the-counter market: A decentralized market where participants trade directly or through dealers rather than on a centralized exchange. Private bilateral derivatives can have terms unlike standardized exchange-listed futures.
Order matching: The process by which a trading system pairs compatible buy and sell orders. Matching orders forms trades in the exchange’s listed contracts.
Standardization (finance): The use of uniform contract terms so financial instruments can be traded interchangeably. Uniform quantity, quality, and expiry terms make futures contracts exchange-traded.
Chicago Board of Trade: A Chicago commodity exchange founded in 1848 that became a major venue for grain futures. Its grain contracts helped establish modern exchange-traded futures practices.
Price discovery: The process through which trading reveals market prices by combining available information and orders. Exchange trading produces widely observed prices for future delivery dates.
Forward contract: A customized agreement between two parties to trade an asset at a future date and price. Forwards resemble futures but are typically negotiated privately rather than exchange-listed.
