Futurism

Futurism was an early twentieth-century avant-garde movement that celebrated speed, machinery, violence, and technological change. It began in Italy and spread across visual art, literature, music, and architecture.

Filippo Tommaso Marinetti: An Italian poet who founded Futurism and wrote its first manifesto. His 1909 manifesto launched the movement and supplied its combative public voice.
Dynamism of a Dog on a Leash: A 1912 painting by Giacomo Balla that renders a walking dog and its handler through repeated forms. Its repeated legs and leash show motion as overlapping visual phases.
Futurist architecture: An architectural movement that imagined dynamic, technologically advanced forms for modern cities. It projected Futurist dynamism onto buildings and urban life.
Cubism: An art movement that represents subjects through fragmented forms and multiple viewpoints. Futurist painters borrowed Cubist fragmentation but emphasized movement and modern energy.
Futurist Manifesto: Filippo Tommaso Marinetti’s 1909 declaration of Futurism’s principles and provocations. It announced Futurism’s celebration of speed, modernity, and rupture with the past.
Unique Forms of Continuity in Space: A 1913 sculpture by Umberto Boccioni depicting a striding figure in flowing forms. Boccioni gives sculptural shape to the movement’s ideal of force moving through space.
Futurist music: Music associated with Futurism that explored machine noise, unconventional instruments, and new sound worlds. It extended the movement’s interest in engines and urban noise into sound.
Vorticism: A British modernist movement that combined machine-age imagery with sharply angular forms. It adapted related machine-age concerns in a distinct British avant-garde setting.
Italian Futurism: The original branch of Futurism, formed in Italy around Marinetti’s circle. Italy was the movement’s birthplace and its most influential center.
Simultaneity: The representation or experience of multiple events occurring at the same time. Futurist works combine successive moments and surrounding impressions in one composition.
