G. Evelyn Hutchinson

G. Evelyn Hutchinson was an English-born American ecologist whose work shaped limnology, theoretical ecology, and the modern concept of the ecological niche.

Ecological niche: The conditions and resources that allow a species to persist and reproduce, together with its ecological roles. Hutchinson formalized the niche as a multidimensional space of conditions and resources.
N-dimensional hypervolume: A model of a species’ niche as a multidimensional region defined by environmental conditions and resources. Hutchinson’s 1957 formulation gave the niche its influential geometric representation.
Charles Elton: A British ecologist who developed influential ideas about food chains, ecological niches, and animal communities. Elton’s functional conception of the niche complemented Hutchinson’s later formal model.
University of Cambridge: A public research university in Cambridge, England, founded in 1209. Hutchinson studied zoology at Cambridge before beginning his research career.
