G. I. Taylor

Geoffrey Ingram Taylor (1886–1975) was a British physicist and mathematician whose work shaped fluid dynamics, turbulence, and the mechanics of materials.

Fluid dynamics: The study of how liquids and gases move and exert forces. This broad field contains Taylor’s work on flow, waves, and turbulence.
Taylor–Couette flow: Fluid motion between two concentric cylinders, often with the inner cylinder rotating. Taylor showed how this flow becomes unstable and forms regular vortices.
Trinity nuclear test: The first detonation of a nuclear weapon, conducted in New Mexico on July 16, 1945. Taylor estimated its energy from photographs of the expanding blast wave.
George I. Taylor: An American engineer and physicist whose work included aerodynamics and structural mechanics. He is a different scientist, often confused with the British fluid dynamicist G. I. Taylor.
Turbulence: Irregular fluid motion characterized by fluctuating velocities and interacting scales. Taylor’s experiments and theories helped make turbulence a quantitative science.
Navier–Stokes equations: Partial differential equations describing momentum transport in viscous fluids. Taylor used their consequences to analyze stability and fluid motion.
Taylor–Green vortex: An idealized three-dimensional vortex flow used to study the decay of turbulence. This mathematical flow became a standard setting for investigating turbulent decay.
Taylor–Couette experiment: A laboratory study of flow between rotating concentric cylinders. Taylor’s 1923 experiments confirmed a mathematical prediction of vortex formation.
Horace Lamb: A British mathematician known for foundational work on hydrodynamics and applied mathematics. Lamb’s hydrodynamics helped shape the mathematical tradition Taylor inherited.
Taylor–von Neumann–Sedov blast wave: A self-similar model of a strong blast wave expanding into a uniform medium. Taylor independently derived its scaling law, which underpinned his Trinity-test energy estimate.
