Being and Having : A distinction between existence as lived participation and possession as control over objects or attributes. Marcel used this distinction to challenge accounts that reduce a person to what they possess or can be measured by.
Presence : An attentive mode of being with another person that exceeds physical proximity or mere awareness. For Marcel, presence makes personal encounter possible where detached observation cannot.
French Existentialism : A twentieth-century philosophical movement in France focused on existence, freedom, responsibility, and human finitude. Marcel belongs to this movement while rejecting some of its secular and individualist formulations.
Jean-Paul Sartre : A French philosopher and writer who developed an influential atheistic existentialism centered on freedom and responsibility. Sartre’s atheism and account of consciousness contrast with Marcel’s religious, participatory philosophy.
