Gagauz people
The Gagauz are a Turkic-speaking people, predominantly Eastern Orthodox Christian, whose historic homeland is Gagauzia in southern Moldova.
Gagauz language: A Turkic language of the Oghuz branch, spoken chiefly by the Gagauz people. Its Oghuz structure anchors Gagauz identity while leaving the people’s deeper origins debated.
Eastern Orthodoxy: A communion of Christian churches that developed in the eastern Roman Empire and shares Orthodox doctrine and liturgy. Gagauz Christianity distinguishes them from many other Oghuz-speaking peoples.
Gagauzia: An autonomous territorial unit in southern Moldova with a predominantly Gagauz population. It is the principal political territory associated with the Gagauz people.
Stepan Topal: A Gagauz political leader who headed the self-proclaimed Gagauz Republic from 1990 to 1994. His leadership shaped the movement that negotiated Gagauzia’s autonomy within Moldova.
Oghuz Turks: A historical grouping of Turkic peoples whose languages include Turkish, Azerbaijani, and Gagauz. Gagauz belongs to the Oghuz linguistic world, though linguistic kinship does not settle ancestry.
Moldova: A landlocked country in Eastern Europe, situated between Romania and Ukraine. Most Gagauz live in Moldova, where Gagauzia holds autonomous territorial status.
Gagauz language revival: Efforts to maintain and expand the use of Gagauz in education, media, and public life. Language programs respond to pressure from more widely used regional languages.
Mihail Formuzal: A Gagauz politician who served as governor of Gagauzia from 2006 to 2015. His tenure offers a prominent case of Gagauz regional leadership within Moldova.
Bessarabia: A historical region between the Prut and Dniester rivers, now divided chiefly between Moldova and Ukraine. Gagauz communities settled in this region during the nineteenth century.
Turkic languages: A language family spoken across Eurasia, including Turkish, Azerbaijani, Kazakh, and Gagauz. The family places Gagauz speech among languages spread across a vast Eurasian area.
