Galactic habitable zone

A proposed region of a galaxy where planets can form and life may persist, balancing access to planet-building elements against hazards such as supernovae.

Metallicity: The abundance of elements heavier than helium in an astronomical object. Higher stellar metallicity generally supplies more material for building rocky planets.
Circumstellar habitable zone: The range of distances from a star where a planet could maintain liquid water on its surface. It describes a local condition that the galactic-scale hypothesis cannot replace.
Michael Hart: An American astrophysicist known for work on the evolution of Earth's atmosphere and planetary habitability. His 1970s work helped frame how galactic history could constrain habitable planets.
Supernova rate: The frequency of supernova explosions in a specified region or population of stars. Regional rates help determine whether explosion risk meaningfully limits habitability.
Core-collapse supernova: The explosive collapse of a massive star's core at the end of its evolution. Nearby explosions can expose planets to harmful radiation and cosmic rays.

Type Ia supernova: A thermonuclear explosion that destroys a white dwarf in a binary system. These events add heavy elements while also posing potential radiation hazards.
Planet formation: The assembly of planets from gas and dust in disks surrounding young stars. The hypothesis requires both suitable environments for planet formation and long-term survival.
