Galicia (Eastern Europe)

Galicia is a historical region of Central and Eastern Europe, now divided mainly between southeastern Poland and western Ukraine. It was ruled by the Habsburg Monarchy as the Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria from 1772 to 1918.

Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria: A Habsburg crown land established in 1772 across territories taken from the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. This was the imperial administrative form Galicia took under Habsburg rule.
Poles: A West Slavic people whose language and national identity developed in Central Europe. Polish elites and communities shaped Galicia’s cities, landholding, and political movements.
Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth: A federated state of Poland and Lithuania that existed from 1569 until the partitions of the late eighteenth century. Much of the territory later called Galicia belonged to this commonwealth before 1772.
Lviv: A city in western Ukraine known historically by names including Lwów, Lemberg, and Lviv. As Galicia’s principal city, it served at different times as a Polish, Austrian, and Ukrainian cultural center.
Polish-Ukrainian War: An armed conflict fought from 1918 to 1919 between Polish and Ukrainian forces over disputed territories. Both states claimed eastern Galicia after Austria-Hungary collapsed.
Partitions of Poland: Three late-eighteenth-century territorial seizures that ended the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The First Partition transferred much of Galicia to the Habsburg Monarchy.
Ukrainians: An East Slavic people whose language and national identity developed in Eastern Europe. Ukrainians formed a large rural population and built national institutions in eastern Galicia.
Austrian Empire: The Habsburg-ruled empire established in 1804 and replaced by Austria-Hungary in 1867. Galicia was a crown land within this empire before the 1867 constitutional settlement.
Kraków: A city in southern Poland that was a major royal and cultural center. Kraków was western Galicia’s leading city and a center of Polish intellectual life.
Holocaust in Galicia: The persecution and mass murder of Jews in German-occupied Galicia during the Second World War. The destruction of Jewish communities transformed the region’s population and cultural landscape.
