Galician nationalism

Galician nationalism is a political movement advocating recognition, self-government, or independence for Galicia. It draws on the region’s distinct language, history, and cultural identity.

Kingdom of Galicia: A medieval kingdom in northwestern Iberia whose territory and political status changed over centuries. Its medieval legacy supplied historical reference points for later claims of Galician political distinctiveness.
Galician language: A Romance language native to Galicia and closely related to Portuguese. Its public status and use are central issues in nationalist debates about recognition and identity.
Galician autonomism: A political position favoring self-government for Galicia within the Spanish state rather than independence. It shares nationalist demands for recognition but rejects or does not require sovereign separation.
Xunta de Galicia: The governing institution of the autonomous community of Galicia, established under the 1981 Statute of Autonomy. It provides the executive institutions through which autonomy is exercised and expanded.
Alfonso Daniel Rodríguez Castelao: The full name of Castelao, a Galician writer, artist, and politician central to twentieth-century Galician nationalism. His essays, art, and political leadership made him the movement’s most emblematic public figure.
Rexurdimento: A nineteenth-century revival of Galician language and literature after centuries of reduced public use. Literary and cultural revival helped make Galician identity a basis for political demands.
Galician Statute of Autonomy of 1936: A proposed statute granting Galicia autonomy, approved by referendum in 1936 but never implemented during the Spanish Civil War. It was the movement’s first major attempt to secure self-government through a legal statute.
Galician independentism: The strand of Galician nationalism that advocates an independent Galician state. It represents the movement’s most far-reaching position on political sovereignty.
Galician Parliament: The unicameral legislature of Galicia, responsible for regional laws and oversight of the Xunta. Its existence gives Galician political parties a forum for debating national recognition and self-government.
Alexandre Bóveda: A Galician nationalist politician and organizer executed by Francoist forces in 1936. His role in the 1936 autonomy campaign and death made him a lasting symbol of repression.
