Galileo affair

The conflict between Galileo Galilei and the Roman Catholic Church over heliocentrism, culminating in his 1633 trial and condemnation by the Inquisition.

Copernican heliocentrism: The astronomical model that places the Sun near the center of the planetary system, with Earth rotating and orbiting it. This was the cosmological claim that brought Galileo into conflict with church authorities.
Roman Inquisition: A Catholic institution established in 1542 to investigate and prosecute heresy. It conducted Galileo’s 1633 proceedings and issued the sentence against him.
Pope Urban VIII: The pope from 1623 to 1644, born Maffeo Barberini, who authorized the proceedings against Galileo. His earlier patronage and later approval connected papal authority directly to the affair.

Robert Bellarmine: A Jesuit theologian and cardinal who advised the Roman Inquisition and addressed heliocentrism in 1616. He communicated the church’s warning to Galileo before the 1633 trial.
Tychonic system: A geoheliocentric model in which the Sun orbits a stationary Earth while the other planets orbit the Sun. It offered a compromise that retained a stationary Earth without the traditional planetary arrangement.
