Game balance

Game balance is the design and adjustment of rules, resources, and options to prevent unintended overwhelming advantages while preserving meaningful choices.

Dominant strategy: A strategy that produces at least as good an outcome as every alternative against any opposing strategy. A dominant strategy can crowd out alternatives and reveal a balance failure.
Game design: The practice of creating a game’s rules, systems, content, and player experience. Balance is one part of the broader work of shaping a playable experience.
Asymmetric gameplay: A design in which players have substantially different abilities, roles, or objectives. Distinct capabilities make fairness harder to measure than identical starting conditions.
Fairness: The quality of treating people or outcomes according to a defensible standard of justice. A game can be statistically balanced yet feel unfair because of access or presentation.
Game theory: The mathematical study of strategic interactions among decision-makers. Its models describe how players’ incentives shape competitive balance.
Game mechanics: The rules and procedures that define how a game operates and what players can do. Mechanics determine the options whose relative strengths must be evaluated.
Real-time strategy: A strategy game genre in which players manage resources and issue actions in real time. Faction matchups and economic openings make strategic balance especially visible.
Symmetry (game design): A game-design property in which players have equivalent rules, options, or starting conditions. Symmetry can simplify balance, but asymmetric games can also be fair and competitive.
Feedback loop: A process in which a system’s outputs influence its later inputs or behavior. Positive feedback can let an early lead compound into an insurmountable advantage.
Player agency: The meaningful capacity of a player to make choices that affect a game’s outcome. Balanced options matter only when players can meaningfully choose among them.
