Game mechanics

Game mechanics are the rules and systems that define player actions, shape interactions, and produce outcomes in a game.

Player agency: A player's capacity to make choices that meaningfully affect a game. Mechanics determine which choices players can make and how much those choices matter.
Core loop: The recurring sequence of actions that forms a game's basic play pattern. It condenses a game's mechanics into the actions players repeat most often.
Game dynamics: Patterns of behavior that emerge when players interact with a game's mechanics. Mechanics are designed rules; dynamics are the play patterns those rules produce.
Turn-based strategy: A strategy game format in which players act in discrete turns rather than simultaneously. Turn order and action limits are mechanics that structure strategic decisions.
Game studies: The interdisciplinary study of games, play, players, and their cultural contexts. Game studies developed analytical language for distinguishing rules, play, and experience.
Game state: The complete set of relevant conditions in a game at a given moment. Mechanics transform the game state in response to player actions and events.
Action point allowance system: A system that gives players a limited pool of points to spend on actions during a turn. It shows how a mechanic can make players choose among competing actions.
Game aesthetics: The emotional experiences and pleasures a game offers during play. Aesthetics describe experienced effects, while mechanics describe systems that help produce them.
Real-time strategy: A strategy game genre in which players act simultaneously while the game continuously advances. Its mechanics make timing and attention central by removing discrete turns.
Rules of Play: A 2004 book by Katie Salen and Eric Zimmerman on game design and meaning. Its framework helped establish mechanics, dynamics, and aesthetics as design concepts.
