Game (play)

A structured activity governed by rules, undertaken for amusement, competition, or both. Games create outcomes through choices made within their rules.

Game rules: Formal or informal constraints that define permitted actions and outcomes in a game. Rules establish the boundaries that make this activity a game.
Strategy game: A game in which planning and decision-making strongly influence outcomes. Strategic games make the evaluation of choices their central challenge.
Video game: A game in which electronic systems present or process player input and game states. Digital games implement rules through software and audiovisual interaction.
Toy: An object designed primarily for play, often without a fixed goal or complete rule system. Toys support play but need not define a game.
Fair play: Conduct that respects a game’s rules and standards of sportsmanship. Shared expectations of fairness help participants accept game outcomes.
Game objective: A condition or result that participants seek to achieve in a game. Objectives give players a reason to make choices within the rules.
Game theory: The mathematical study of strategic decisions among agents whose outcomes depend on one another. It models competitive choices that arise in many games.
Sport: A physical activity or competition governed by rules and commonly organized around skill or athletic performance. Sports are rule-governed competitions whose outcomes depend on physical performance.
Puzzle: A problem designed to be solved through reasoning, pattern recognition, or manipulation. Puzzles may have rules and goals but often lack ongoing competition among players.
Sportsmanship: Respectful conduct toward opponents, officials, and the rules of competition. Competition in games is shaped by norms beyond written rules.
