Gamete

A reproductive cell that fuses with another gamete during fertilization to form a zygote. Gametes typically carry one set of chromosomes.

Meiosis: A type of cell division that produces cells with half the chromosome number of the original cell. This division usually produces gametes by halving chromosome number.
Fertilization: The union of gametes that initiates formation of a zygote. It is the process in which gametes fuse.
Isogamy: A reproductive system in which fusing gametes are similar in size and form. It contrasts with systems that distinguish large eggs from small sperm.
In vitro fertilization: A fertility treatment in which eggs and sperm are combined outside the body. The procedure brings gametes together under controlled laboratory conditions.
Haploid: Having one set of chromosomes in a cell or organism. Most gametes are haploid, allowing chromosome sets to combine at fertilization.
Zygote: The first cell formed by the fusion of two gametes. The zygote is the immediate product of gamete fusion.
Anisogamy: A reproductive system in which fusing gametes differ in size or form. It explains the size difference between eggs and sperm in many species.
Intracytoplasmic sperm injection: A fertility technique that injects one sperm directly into an egg. It assists fertilization when sperm cannot penetrate the egg unaided.
Diploid: Having two sets of chromosomes in a cell or organism. Gametes usually have half the chromosome sets found in diploid body cells.
Sperm: A male reproductive cell that can fuse with an egg during fertilization. Sperm is one specialized form of gamete.
