Gandhara art

Gandhara art is an ancient sculptural tradition from the Gandhara region, combining Buddhist subjects with Hellenistic, Iranian, and South Asian forms. It is especially known for anthropomorphic images of the Buddha and narrative reliefs.

Gandhara: An ancient region centered in parts of present-day Afghanistan and Pakistan, shaped by South and Central Asian connections. The region’s cultural crossroads supplied the setting for this sculptural tradition.
Schist: A foliated metamorphic rock that splits along aligned mineral layers. Gray schist was a characteristic medium for many Gandharan sculptures.

Stucco: A moldable plaster mixture used to cover surfaces and form architectural or sculptural decoration. Stucco allowed Gandharan workshops to produce modeled figures and elaborate ornament.
Indo-Greek Kingdom: A Hellenistic kingdom that ruled parts of northwestern South Asia from the second to first centuries BCE. Its political and artistic presence forms part of the region’s Hellenistic background.
Takht-i-Bahi: A Buddhist monastic complex in Pakistan, founded in the early centuries CE and used for centuries afterward. Its surviving architecture and sculpture offer a major context for Gandharan art.
Amaravati art: A Buddhist sculptural tradition from the lower Krishna River region of India, especially known for dynamic limestone reliefs. Its narrative reliefs provide a contrasting South Asian approach to Buddhist imagery.
