Gao Empire

The Gao Empire was a medieval West African state centered on Gao along the Niger River. It preceded the Songhai Empire and helped establish Gao as a regional political center.

Gao: A city on the Niger River in present-day Mali, historically a major center of trade and political power. The city gave the state its name and served as its center.
Trans-Saharan trade: The exchange of goods and people across the Sahara linking North Africa with sub-Saharan Africa. Gao’s position connected Niger River commerce with routes crossing the Sahara.
Songhai Empire: A West African empire that flourished in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, centered on the middle Niger. It succeeded the Gao state and expanded its political base into a major empire.
Tarikh al-Sudan: A seventeenth-century Arabic chronicle of the history of the western Sudan, written by al-Sa'di. It preserves retrospective accounts of Gao and Songhai, composed centuries after the early state.
Koukia: An early settlement near the Niger River, associated with the origins of the Songhai people and polity. Traditions link early Songhai political history to this settlement before Gao’s ascendancy.
Niger River trade: Commercial exchange carried by the Niger River and its settlements in West Africa. River traffic linked Gao with producers and markets upstream and downstream.
Sonni Ali: The Songhai ruler who reigned from 1464 to 1492 and greatly expanded the empire. His conquests made Gao the center of a much larger successor state.

Songhai people: A West African people whose language and political institutions shaped the Songhai Empire. The state’s ruling community formed the foundation for later Songhai power.
Taghaza: A Saharan salt-mining settlement whose salt was traded across West Africa. Salt from Saharan mines was among the valuable goods moving toward Gao’s markets.
