Gapsin Coup

The Gapsin Coup was a failed 1884 uprising by Korean reformist officials who sought to displace the Qing-influenced government and establish an independent, modernized state.

Kim Ok-gyun: A Korean reformist official who led the Gapsin Coup and advocated rapid modernization and independence from Qing influence. He organized the coup and became its leading political figure.
Gaehwa Party: A Korean reformist faction that sought institutional modernization and a stronger, more independent state. Its members supplied the coup’s core organizers and political program.
First Sino-Japanese War: An 1894–1895 war between China and Japan fought chiefly over influence in Korea. The rivalry exposed by the coup later escalated into open war over Korea.
