Gas lighting

Gas lighting produces illumination by burning a fuel gas, typically in a lamp or mantle. It was widely used in buildings and streets before electric lighting became common.

Gas burner: A device that mixes and directs fuel gas for controlled combustion. Its flame is the basic light source in a gas lamp.
William Murdoch: A Scottish engineer who developed practical coal-gas lighting in the late eighteenth century. His demonstrations helped establish gas as a usable lighting fuel.
Street lighting: The illumination of roads and public spaces after dark. Gas lamps made continuous nighttime lighting practical in many cities.
Urbanization: The growth of cities as populations and economic activity become concentrated in urban areas. Gas networks expanded alongside dense urban growth and reshaped city services.
Arc lamp: An electric lamp that produces light from an electrical arc between electrodes. Arc lamps competed with gas for powerful outdoor and public illumination.
Welsbach mantle: A heat-resistant mesh that glows brightly when heated by a gas flame. It made gas lamps much brighter by converting flame heat into incandescent light.
Frederick Winsor: A German-born inventor and promoter who helped establish commercial gas lighting in Britain. His advocacy and company building drove early public gas-lighting projects.
Gas lighting in theaters: The use of gas flames and burners to illuminate stages and auditoriums. Theaters used gas for broad illumination and controllable stage effects.
Gas explosion: A violent release of energy caused by ignition of accumulated combustible gas. Leaks from gas pipes and fixtures created a risk absent from electric lamps.
Kerosene lamp: A lamp that burns kerosene in a wick to produce light. It offered portable illumination where gas pipes were unavailable.
