Gasherbrum I

Gasherbrum I is an 8,080-meter peak in the Karakoram on the Pakistan–China border. Also called Hidden Peak, it is the world’s eleventh-highest mountain.

1958 American Karakoram Expedition: An American expedition that made the first ascent of Gasherbrum I in 1958. Pete Schoening and Andy Kauffman reached the summit during this expedition.
Karakoram: A mountain range spanning parts of Pakistan, India, and China, containing many of the world’s highest peaks. Gasherbrum I is one of the range’s major eight-thousanders.
Gasherbrum I normal route: The commonly used climbing route on Gasherbrum I, approaching from the south and ascending its northwest face. It shows the standard line climbers use to reach the summit.
K2: An 8,611-meter Karakoram peak, the world’s second-highest mountain. K2 is a taller neighboring eight-thousander with a very different level of climbing difficulty.
Pete Schoening: An American mountaineer known for major Himalayan and Karakoram expeditions. He was one of the two climbers on Gasherbrum I’s first ascent.
Eight-thousander: A mountain whose summit rises above 8,000 meters above sea level. Its 8,080-meter summit places it among this small group of peaks.
Baltoro Glacier: A large glacier in the Karakoram that provides access to several major peaks. Climbers approach the Gasherbrum region through the glacier’s upper basin.
Broad Peak: An 8,051-meter mountain in the Karakoram and the world’s twelfth-highest peak. It lies near Gasherbrum I and is slightly shorter.
Andy Kauffman: An American mountaineer who made the first ascent of Gasherbrum I with Pete Schoening. His summit partnership with Schoening established the route in 1958.
Gasherbrum: A mountain group in the Karakoram that includes several high peaks near the Baltoro Glacier. Gasherbrum I is the highest summit in this mountain group.
