Gaslighting

Gaslighting is psychological manipulation that leads someone to doubt their memory, perception, or judgment. It commonly involves repeated denial, distortion, or concealment of events.

Denial: A refusal to acknowledge a fact, event, or responsibility. Repeatedly denying events can make someone question whether they happened.
Gas Light: A 1938 play by Patrick Hamilton about a husband who manipulates his wife into doubting her sanity. The play supplied the source for the modern name of the manipulation.
Lying: The intentional communication of something believed to be false. A lie can mislead without aiming to make another person distrust their own judgment.
Learned helplessness: A response in which repeated exposure to uncontrollable adversity reduces attempts to change a situation. Prolonged manipulation can leave someone feeling unable to challenge what is happening.
Blame shifting: A tactic that redirects responsibility for a problem onto another person. It recasts objections to manipulation as evidence that the target is at fault.
Intimate partner violence: Physical, sexual, or psychological harm inflicted by a current or former intimate partner. Gaslighting can be one tactic within an abusive intimate relationship.
Psychological abuse: Behavior that harms another person’s emotional well-being or sense of self through intimidation, degradation, or control. Gaslighting is often discussed as one possible form of psychological abuse.
Trauma bonding: A strong attachment that can develop within a relationship marked by cycles of abuse and intermittent kindness. Alternating harm and reassurance can complicate efforts to recognize or leave an abusive relationship.
Coercive control: A pattern of behavior used to dominate another person and restrict their autonomy. Gaslighting can operate within a broader pattern of domination and constraint.
Workplace bullying: Repeated hostile behavior at work that humiliates, intimidates, or undermines a person. A colleague or manager may use denial and distortion to undermine someone’s credibility.
