Gaspard Monge

Gaspard Monge (1746–1818) was a French mathematician and engineer who founded descriptive geometry and helped establish the École Polytechnique.

Descriptive geometry: A method for representing three-dimensional objects on two-dimensional surfaces through geometric projections. Monge developed its systematic methods for solving spatial problems through drawings.
École Polytechnique: A French engineering and scientific institution founded in 1794 during the French Revolution. Monge helped establish the school and taught there after its founding.
École de Mézières: A French military engineering school founded in the eighteenth century. Monge taught at Mézières, where engineering problems prompted his geometric methods.
Technical drawing: The precise graphical communication of an object’s form, dimensions, and construction. Descriptive geometry provided systematic ways to represent engineering designs accurately.
Orthographic projection: A projection method that maps an object onto a plane using parallel lines perpendicular to that plane. Its paired views made Monge’s geometric constructions usable in engineering.
