Gaston Bachelard

Gaston Bachelard (1884–1962) was a French philosopher whose work examined scientific knowledge and the poetic imagination. He developed influential accounts of epistemological rupture, poetic images, and the elemental imagination.

Epistemological obstacle: A familiar belief or habit of thought that impedes the formation of scientific knowledge. Bachelard used the idea to explain why science must overcome intuitive assumptions.
