Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve

A protected wilderness in northern Alaska encompassing much of the Brooks Range. It preserves arctic ecosystems, free-flowing rivers, and lands with deep Native cultural connections.

Brooks Range: A mountain range stretching across northern Alaska and into Canada, forming part of the Arctic Cordillera. The park’s rugged terrain is centered on this range.
Wilderness Act: A 1964 United States law creating a system for protecting federally designated wilderness areas from development. Wilderness protections govern much of the park’s land.
Iñupiat: An Inuit people whose communities live across northern Alaska and neighboring Arctic regions. Iñupiat communities have enduring cultural and subsistence ties to the region.
Denali National Park and Preserve: A protected area in central Alaska containing Denali, North America’s highest mountain. Unlike Denali’s heavily visited southern entrance, this park has no road access.
Arctic National Wildlife Refuge: A vast protected area in northeastern Alaska, known for tundra, wildlife, and the coastal plain of the Arctic Ocean. It is a neighboring protected landscape with a different conservation history.
Subsistence: The customary use of wild resources to meet household and community needs, including food and materials. Rural residents may continue customary subsistence uses under federal law.
Koyukon: An Athabascan people whose traditional homeland includes parts of interior Alaska. Koyukon people maintain cultural connections to lands near and within the park.
Katmai National Park and Preserve: A protected area in southern Alaska known for volcanic landscapes, brown bears, and salmon runs. Katmai’s famous wildlife destinations contrast with this park’s largely unbuilt wilderness.
Noatak National Preserve: A protected area in northwestern Alaska encompassing the Noatak River watershed and surrounding wilderness. Its river-centered wilderness lies west of the park.
Packrafting: A form of wilderness travel using a lightweight inflatable boat that can be carried in a backpack. It lets visitors combine hiking with travel on remote rivers.
